A round tour of Nuwara Eliya will take you to some of the ‘must visit’ places that promise good memories and plenty of beautiful photographs to be taken back home. Starting off early will help see as many places as possible and to take in the beauty before the noon sun comes up. A good travel plan will help as most destinations can be bundled together making it easier to cover in one go!

Tea Estate

Visit a tea estate with its acres of tea bushes pruned to look like a verdant green carpet stretched out in the morning sun. Watch the comely damsels dressed with baskets hanging loosely on their backs pick the prized two leaves and bud that go into making the champagne of Pure Ceylon Teas. You too can give them a hand, while learning the process and having a friendly chat.

Horton Plains

Named after British Governor Sir Robert Wilmot-Horton the Horton Plains is a National Park with a difference. Covered with Montane grasslands and cloud forests wrapped in mist and rain the plains is rich in biodiversity with many exclusive endemic species of fauna and flora being found here. It is popularly known for its large populace of sambar deer and bird species.

A fine trekking destination that will take you through tea plantations and scenic landscapes before you reach the summit situated 6890 feet above sea level where a solitary tree stands giving the mountain its name. Be gripped by the panoramic view of Nuwara Eliya, the surrounding mountains and lake Gregory and on a clear day even Adam’s Peak and the cascading waterfalls.

Nuwara Eliya Golf Club

Established 1889, the Golf Club is the oldest in Sri Lanka. Located on the foothills of Mount Pedro, surrounded by gigantic eucalyptus trees, colourful blooms and many waterways, it is probably the most beautiful too. Its 18-hole Golf Course, along with its charming clubhouse and restaurant makes it an inviting destination for both professionals and amateurs.

Named after the then British Ceylon Governor Sir William Henry Gregory in 1873, Lake Gregory is a beautiful waterfront for relaxation and fun activities such as picnics, boat rides, pony rides and even an unhurried walk on the paved foot paths. Enjoy some scrumptious food from the food stalls close by and wash it down with a cup of hot Ceylon tea.

For those interested in a refreshing educational tour with a difference, a visit to the Ambewala Dairy Farm is certainly a good idea. Watch the farm’s Friesian Cows dotting the grasslands before taking a tour of the factory that produces Milk, Cheese and Yoghurt; and remember to taste some too at the factory sales outlet at the entrance.
